The origin of the breed is unknown, but research by the University of Cordoba in Spain has concluded that the breed is indigenous to the island. Even during the dark days of World War II, when for five years Guernsey was under German occupation, the breed was still being registered. The long-haired coat comes in all shades of gold from pale to bronze, sometimes with small white markings and a star on the forehead.

One of the largest and possibly best-known herds was that of Miss Milbourne of L’Ancresse who owned over fifty Golden Guernseys, which played an important part in helping revive the breed in the 1930s. The gene pool is very small and tremendous efforts are being made to improve the situation and secure the future of this beautiful breed. In an effort to safeguard their future, a number are being raised in New York State, but only the purebred with UK registration are allowed to use the proud title of “Golden Guernsey.”
